Fig. 121. Head of a fragmentary statue of a female member of the royal family during the reign of Taharqa; her name and principal titles are missing and the face has been extensively restored (Nicholson R41).

On the border of the Twenty-fifth Dynasty homeland of Nubia, Taharqa may have been the first king to build on the sacred island of Isis at Philae, to judge from a few fragments extant there.211 Deeper into Lower Nubia, the clifftop fortress at Qasr Ibrim (fig. 123) was renewed and a temple erected there,212 while at the Middle Kingdom Second Cataract fortress at Semna a new temple was built.213 Some kind of construction also seems to have been undertaken at or near Sedeinga.214

The main Nubian concentrations of Taharqa’s monuments were, however, between the Third and Fourth Cataracts. At Taba, on Argo Island, a large temple was built,215 while further south, at Kawa, Taharqa extended Tutankhamun’s Temple A and built Temple T,216 the first court of the latter being the location for a series of important stelae.217 Opposite the ancestral cemetery of el-Kurru, at the site of Sanam, a temple was built,218 with work also being carried out at the capital, Gebel Barkal. The latter included the construction of a rock-cut temple of Mut (B300),219 the addition of a bark stand to the Amun temple (B500),220 together with work in temple B200,221 and the addition of an inscription on one of the uraeus-form peaks at the front of the Gebel itself (cf. fig. 106).222
